Introduction
The art, history, and culture of Ancient Egypt have captivated many people
over the millennia. I confess to being a rank amateur in the field of
Egyptology, but sometimes that's a good thing - you're not so contaminated by
orthodoxy, and you don't feel bad about asking seemingly (or actually) stupid
questions. This page is not meant to be authoritative in any way - more a
springboard for some ideas. Have fun, and feel free to
email
me if you have any comments.
Chronological controversy
The chronology of Ancient Egypt tends to stir up quite a bit of debate. The
problem is that we can't pin down the exact dates at which the various
pharaohs would have reigned. There is the Orthodox Chronology, which is
the ballpark you'll find in most books, and there are variants of "New
Chronology" which have been proposed, the most controversial, yet
most plausible, of which is the version put forward by David
Rohl at www.nunki.net. I'll be the first to admit that I have no idea
whether David Rohl is right or wrong, but he makes some very nice arguments,
some of which are going to be testable, and at the end of the day the
archaeological evidence will decide the matter.
Rameses the Great comes to Whiteabbey
Rameses II paid my back
garden a brief visit back in December 2000, after a rather heavy snowfall. This
mighty colossus (height: 1.2m) was revealed after several hours' painstaking
excavation...

This majestic work of art unfortunately did not survive the rigours of the
remainder of the rather mild Northern Irish winter, and you just have to take my
word for it that his cartouche is round the back.
