Medical elective, Nazareth, Israel, 1993

This is a work in progress. My plan is to have a rambling account of some of the salient happenings during my medical elective in Nazareth in 1993. It left quite an impression on me, and although I'm doing this merely for my own benefit, others may find it helpful. There are quite a few photographs, so I hope you've got a good web connection. If you're fed up already, you can always hit the "Back" button...

This is me, with the town of Nazareth laid out behind me. On the hill to the left is the new town of Nazerat Illit. Off to the right is the Hill of the Precipitation, where I spent many happy hours picking over the remains of dead tortoises and other unfortunate fauna. But that's another story...

This is Nazareth EMMS Hospital as it was in June 1993. Actually, it's the "new block" which was being built at the time. The main hospital is over to the right, out of sight. [Visit the Hospital's website at http://www.nazhosp.com

I arrived as a lone medical student, to undertake my medical elective (in the UK medical students are encouraged to go away for about 2 months to get further medical training/experience in another country). Here's the accommodation:

Quite nice, I think you'll agree. The male medical students occupied a small room on the ground floor to the right of the picture (behind the stairway). It was pretty basic, but it did the job. The shower was also rather no-frills, and the immersion heater for the water looked frankly dangerous. However we all managed to keep nice and clean most of the time. The female medical students were accommodated along with the nursing students (the hospital has a School of Nursing), which was much more comfortable.

I don't go into operating theatres very often as a rule. But at least here is some photographic evidence.

Here's the main entrance to the Emergency Room. Uncharacteristically quiet, actually. Usually it was a pretty busy place.

A charming view from the rooftop of the new block (being painted in 1993). The ER and outpatients department are in that 2-storey block to the left.

Meet Jan and Ulrich. They were the hospital carpenters in Nazareth (presumably following a noble tradition), and this was their workshop. Lots of work to be done all around the hospital compound, and no better guys to do it.

And we all had to do some general compound work. This heap of garbage is the result of a large clear-up endeavour which involved practically all hospital staff. The place fairly shone after we got rid of all this stuff.

Above are Ulrich (whom you've met before, on the left) and Kai, two of the carpenters. Kai & Ulrich are from southern Germany, but hardly ever wore Lederhosen in Nazareth. Here they are sizing up a bench for conversion into some ingenious woodworking project (actually they're moving it in preparation for a night-time roof-top party).
