Remember Palmaris? Yes, while Psion palmtops were in their glorious
ascendancy, we produced the best medical software around, as well as some other
corkers. The software is still available here!
In particular, I'd like to draw your attention to Client_L,
HebRead and PdbRead.
Get yourself over to ebay now, and
pick up a Psion Series 5mx for a rock-bottom price. You will not regret
it. These machines truly are laptop replacements, and there is a mass of
available software, much of it FREE (like the stuff here).
I have now returned to my trusty Psion 5mx after using a PocketPC (Fujitsu
Siemens Loox 600 - great wee machine). The PPC is fine, but you can't really
use it for serious work. That's the core problem. The Series 5mx, however, is a
true productivity tool. Maybe someone will pick it up again - a colour 5mx with
stereo MP3 playback, SD card support, WiFi & bluetooth - wouldn't it be
great?
Enough reminiscing: here's the software:
CLIENT_L - the world's favourite Psion patient / client
manager
If you're a doctor, you'll wonder how you ever coped without Client_L. It
helps you organise your patients the way your brain likes to. Wonderful for
keeping track of who needs what done.
PDBREAD - Palm databases at your disposal
You always knew your Psion was better than a Palm... but the Palm
has lots and lots of databases available for it. Fret no more - PdbRead
allows you to open many different Palm-format databases on your Psion machine!
And it's FREE!
STEREOVU - 3D pictures on your wee Psion
Amaze your friends, infuriate your enemies, and ostracise your family by
goggling at this amazing 3D picture generator. It's based on the same
principle as those "Magic Eye" things which were so popular a few
years ago, but now you can create your own! On your Palmtop! How cool is that?
History Lesson
For about 13 years now, I have been using Psion
palmtop computers to organise my daily life, and as a convenient excuse for
forgetting my wife's birthday. My current model is a Psion Series 5mx, but let's
step back through the ages to see how it all began...
Before the Flood
Noah was very careful to prevent water leaking into his battery compartment,
but no matter how hard you try, there are still some problems which can't be
sorted out with bitumen caulking...

EPOC Exodus
The Children of Israel were very keen on Moses's Psion when he got it in
part-exchange for his staff of wood, but the battery problem just wouldn't go
away...

Thou shalt not...
However, the benefits of handheld mobility, "always-on"
functionality, efficient memory storage devices, and ability to fit comfortably
into a robe pocket, meant that certain devotees became rather dependent on their
palmtops.
Coming back up to date
Incurring divine wrath notwithstanding, a Psion handheld computer is now a
vital part of medical treatment, and I'm sure many patients have benefitted from
their use in clinical practice.

Now, sadly, the Psion palmtop is out of production. Even so, there is still
no doubt that a 256MB Revo with colour screen, CF & SD card support, USB,
WiFi, BlueTooth, inbuilt MP3 & media player and camera would kick the
ass of any PDA currently on the market. Please dear god let someone listen...
